Video: SEO Explained in 3 Minutes

Quite often I get asked the question; “What is search engine optimisation or SEO?”. Understanding what SEO is, how it works and how it impacts on your business is vital to having a successful website and internet marketing strategy.

I’ve seen a few videos and articles explaining the subject of SEO, but I recently came across a 3 minute video from Search Engine Land which sums it up in a very concise and easy to understand way.  Check it out below:

The key points the video makes:

  • Words matter
  • Titles matter
  • Links
  • Words in links
  • Reputation

I agree 100% with all of those points, but I would like to also add in one more factor of my own:

Crawlability

It’s one thing for search engines to be able to discern what the content on your website is about and how it relates to other sites. However, if you are preventing search engines from accessing and indexing your website, then they won’t be able to send any visitors your way.

Some of the common crawlability mistakes that some websites make are:

  • Blocking access by robots.txt
  • Too much flash
  • Too much javascript
  • Duplicate and complex URL’s

Summary

The video from Search Engine Land is a fantastic and easy to understand introduction to SEO. There are obviously more factors to SEO than those outlined in the video, such as the ability for the search engines to crawl a website.
